CNPq-TWAS FELLOWSHIPS PROGRAMME

Young scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) are invited to apply to the 2012 CNPq- TWAS Fellowships programme. The fellowships offered by the CNPq-TWAS Fellowships programme allow scientists from developing countries (other than Brazil) to study or to do research in natural sciences in Brazil and then to return home to continue their careers.

The National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq), Brasilia, Brazil – www.cnpq.br – is a foundation linked to the Brazilian Ministry of Science and Technology. CNPq is one of the major public institutions supporting science, technology and innovation in Brazil and contributes directly to the training of researchers in the various fields of knowledge. TWAS, the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World – www.twas.org – is an autonomous international organization founded in Trieste, Italy, in 1983. Its principal aim is to promote scientific capacity and excellence for sustainable development in the South. Submission period: Applications must be submitted by Thursday, June 30, 2011, at 6 PM in Brasilia time zone (GMT -04:00). Full information at CNPq site.

The Rise of Chemodiversity in Plants

Jing-Ke Weng, Ryan N. Philippe, Joseph P. Noel*

Plants possess multifunctional and rapidly evolving specialized metabolic enzymes. Many metabolites do not appear to be immediately required for survival; nonetheless, many may contribute to maintaining population fitness in fluctuating and geographically dispersed environments. Others may serve no contemporary function but are produced inevitably as minor products by single enzymes with varying levels of catalytic promiscuity. The dominance of the terrestrial realm by plants likely mirrored expansion of specialized metabolism originating from primary metabolic pathways. Compared with their evolutionarily constrained counterparts in primary metabolism, specialized metabolic enzymes may be more tolerant to mutations normally considered destabilizing to protein structure and function. If this is true, permissiveness may partially explain the pronounced chemodiversity of terrestrial plants.

A vision for 21st century agricultural research

  • Laboratorio Nacional de Genómica para la Biodiversidad, Centro de Investigación y Estudios Avanzados del IPN, Irapuato, Guanajuato, México

Let’s admit an unfortunate truth: agricultural research in most of the world is based on old models that no longer serve us well in the twenty-first century as arable land diminishes, populations increase, and climate is changing. A dramatically new vision is needed in order to remake agricultural research, perhaps radically, to address the challenges of the world we find ourselves in today. Here is an attempt to begin to develop such a vision.
